If you’re trying to set up or fix an operating system on your machine, a bootable USB is extremely useful to have on hand. A USB drive can be use to boot some operating systems. This guide will show you how to make a USB drive that will boot on Windows.
What You Should Know
A bootable USB drive can be use to install an entirely fresh operating system or fix an existing one.
Windows includes its own recovery drive utility that can be use to produce a bootable Windows USB.
To make a bootable USB device, use Rufus on Windows or Balena Etcher on Mac.
Step by step Method for Windows
1 Create or download an image file.
If you have an image file (like a “.iso,” “.img,” “.usb,” or “.vhd”) that you wish to convert into a bootable USB drive, that’s fantastic! If you don’t have one, you can make one from an existing CD/DVD/Blu-ray or from current files and directories.
For example, if you wish to create a bootable Ubuntu drive, go to https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop and download the ISO of Ubuntu.
2 Rufus can be download here
Rufus is a free, lightweight application that is highly recommendable by programmers and product specialists worldwide. To download Rufus, open a web browser and navigate to https://rufus.ie. Scroll down to the “Download” header and click the first link. It will be the most recent version of the utility.
3. Click the download file twice. It’s the Rufus-3.21.exe file (the version number may vary)
Download files are store in the Downloads section of your computer by default. To launch Rufus, double-tap the file in the Downloads directory or in your web browser. If prompt, confirm that you want Rufus to apply the modifications to your system.
4 Put in your USB flash disc.
Make sure you’re using a drive that’s big enough to hold your image file.
Caution: Creating a bootable disc will overwrite and wipe any existing data on the USB drive. Make a backup of any data on the flash drive which you aren’t willing to lose before you begin. You will also be unable to utilize the USB drive to store files or data once it converts into a bootable disc.
5
Choose the USB thumb drive by selecting the “Device” drop-down option. It’s located near the very top inside the Rufus window.
6
Choose ISO Image. Use the drop-down option close to the “File title” box to pick “ISO image.” ISO image files include the extensions “.iso,” “.img,” “.vhd,” “.usb,” and others.
7
Choose your picture file. Click the image file you wish to select, then click Open in the lower-right corner.
This changes the “Volume label” column to match the ISO. If you want to rename the drive, simply replace the text with whatever you desire.
The other settings should be OK as is, but feel free to alter any parameters if necessary.
8
To begin creating the drive, click Start. Rufus is going to copy the picture file onto the drive, making it bootable once complete. This could take some time. After the drive is finish, hit Close in the bottom-right area to exit Rufus.
Congrats! Now your drive is bootable.
